Who am I?

My name is Sara Singer, and I'm running for Brunswick County Commissioner.  I own Smiles & Purrs, a pet care company, and I’m proud of the relationships I’ve built with so many folks and their pets. To go into people’s homes every day and look after their family members and property is no small responsibility, so I appreciate the trust my clients have in me.

Why I'm running for Commissioner

I’m also a mother to three beautiful, amazing children. I hope for, and worry about, their futures daily — as all parents do. I’ve dreamed of living by the ocean since I was little, and to have the opportunity to live near gorgeous Holden Beach is a dream come true. I want my family to build our roots here. I want to watch our children blossom into thriving adults here. And I’d like to see them planting their own roots in Brunswick.

What my husband and I didn’t know before moving here was the state of our toxic water — how PFAS are in homes across the county; how people and the ocean are being poisoned by the actions of irresponsible corporations like Chemours. We were also unaware of the lack of well-managed development. Every day, I see new construction popping up while trees are being cut down. What future is this leaving for my kids? For yours?

I decided to run for political office while bathing my kids one night (they’re ages four, three and one).  It’s a daily routine that suddenly held great importance to me as a parent. How many parents have told their kids repeatedly, “Don’t drink the bath water!”? And yet they continually try? Chemours has claimed bathing is safe in our PFAs-filled water, but how can I, as a mom, be sure? How can I watch my children splash and play while wondering, “Will this cause them cancer years down the road?”

My platform

No parent - I repeat not one single parent - should ever have to choose between keeping their children clean on a daily basis and protecting them as much as possible from cancer-causing plastics in the water.

My platform is simple. We all deserve clean water. We need to protect the trees and bees and all the living creatures. We must invest in our public schools so that our future adult citizens can thrive. We need sufficient roadways and healthcare access for our expanding population. This insane, unchecked development needs to be reigned in and replaced with smart, managed growth. We can make Brunswick County better for our citizens and a shining beacon of progress in North Carolina.

I want to sit down with you and listen to your concerns and needs. I ask that you don’t look at me as a partisan candidate, but as a fellow citizen - we shop in the same stores, we drive the same roads, our kids and grandkids interact on the playgrounds. We all want our families to have the opportunity to thrive. I’m willing to work with anyone and everyone who wants to build a brighter future for our communities. Work with me. Grow with me.

We must cultivate our garden. . .

When we say someone changes the world, what we really mean is they change our world. I want to be that change — for our communities, neighborhoods, and homes. We must strengthen our roots, the roots of this county, so we can all thrive. As Voltaire wrote, we must cultivate our garden.

Thank you for listening.

I’m Sara Singer.

And I am running for County Commissioner.
